God Tests Abraham

Age 5+: Read Genesis 22:1-13
Under 5: Read about the sacrifice of Isaac from a children's story bible or the short summary below.

God spoke to Abraham and told him to take his only son, Isaac, whom he loved, and go to a place called Moriah. There he was to give Isaac to God as a burnt offering. Abraham left the next day early in the morning. He took Isaac with him. Abraham carried the fire and the knife. Isaac carried the wood. Isaac asked his father, “I see the fire and wood, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?” Abraham replied, “God will provide the lamb.”

They came to the place. Abraham built an altar there. He put the wood on it and then he tied up Isaac and laid him on top of the wood. Abraham stretched put his hand and took the knife to kill his son. Just then, an angel of the Lord called out to him from heaven, “Abraham! Do not lay a hand on the boy or do anything to him, for now I know that you fear God since you have not withheld your only son.” Abraham looked up and saw a ram caught in a bush. So he took the ram and sacrificed it instead of his son.
