Jesus Enters Jerusalem

Age 5+: Read Luke 19:28-44, John 12:12-19
Under 5: Read about Jesus entering Jerusalem from a children's story bible or the short summary below.

As Jesus entered the city of Jerusalem, riding on a donkey, people lined the streets before Him. They took off their coats and threw them on the ground to make a path for Him. Some of them took palm branches off the trees and waved them in the air. They began to praise God with joy. The people shouted, “Hosanna!”

Jesus cried when He saw the city. He knew there were many people who still did not believe in Him. God wanted Jerusalem to be a peaceful place, but He knew that was not going to happen. The Pharisees didn’t like how the people followed Jesus. They were afraid the people would start listening to Him instead of them.

Preschool questions:
What did Jesus ride into Jerusalem? A donkey.
What did the people wave in the air? Palm branches.
What did the people shout? “Hosanna!”

Elementary questions:
Why did Jesus ride on a donkey into Jerusalem? To fulfill the prophecy in Zechariah 9:9
Why is the Sunday before Easter called Palm Sunday? It represents how the people waved palm fronds when Jesus entered Jerusalem for the final time before his death and resurrection.
Why are the people singing and rejoicing? They are praising God and accepting Jesus as their King.

Preteen application:
Jesus rarely accepted praise like this. Why do you think He allowed it this time? To acknowledge God (Luke 19:37), to fulfill the prophecy (John 12:16), He is worthy (Luke 19:40), and it was time – the Kingdom was at hand.
When Jesus entered Jerusalem, He knew He was going to be killed. Why didn’t He try to sneak in quietly? Jesus knew what had to be done to save His people and He was not afraid. Jesus didn’t enter reluctantly or hesitantly. Instead, He went in boldly, to the cheers and cries of many.
