The Birth of Jesus

Age 5+: Read Luke 2:1-7
Under 5: Read about the birth of Jesus from a children's story bible or the short summary below.

At the time Jesus was to be born, Mary and Joseph had to travel a long way to Bethlehem. The king wanted to count all the people at that time. It took a long time to get to Bethlehem because there were no cars, or airplanes, or trains. Most people had to walk or ride on donkeys. When they got there, it was very busy with lots of people, but not enough beds. But the baby was coming soon! It was probably dark outside, and cold. Mary and Joseph went to a warm, dry stable where the animals slept.
In the stable, surrounded by the farm animals, Mary gave birth to God's son. She wrapped him snugly in cloths and laid him in a feeding box for the animals, called a manger.

Preschool questions:
Where was Jesus born? In a stable, in Bethlehem.
How did Mary and Joseph get to Bethlehem? They walked, Mary rode a donkey.
Was Jesus placed in a crib? No, in a manger/ feeding box.

Elementary questions:
Why did Mary and Joseph have to travel to Bethlehem? Caesar made a law that required all people to be counted.
What is a manger? A feeding box for animals.
What do you think Mary and Joseph might have said to God after Jesus was born? They probably thanked God and praised Him.

Preteen application:
Is Jesus a man or God? Jesus is both fully God and fully man.
Why do we need a Savior? Our sin separates us from God and deserves death.

Memory Verse: Matthew 1:21 “You are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” (NIV)

Journal (age 8+)
Copy memory verse, write why you are thankful for Jesus, and write down any prayer requests.

Journal (age 3+)
Draw and color a picture of baby Jesus. Copy memory verse if able.

Optional activity: Think about what makes you joyful. You might think joy comes from toys or people, but joy comes from happiness inside our hearts. Baby Jesus was born in a stable, without even a bed to sleep in. Mary must have been rather uncomfortable. They did not have a nice room in which to stay or nice clothes to put on. Yet, they had joy in their hearts because they were so glad for what God had done for them. What are some ways you can have joy even when you don't get everything you want or need?

Prayer: Praise and thank God, ask for forgiveness, submit any prayer requests.
